SR-71 Blackbird
Mad Science Forge is now offering custom rings and wedding bands made of titanium from SR-71 Blackbird aircraft.
Due to expertise in working with exotic titanium alloys, Mecha has been recruited by Sgt. Daniel Freeman of Mach3ti.com to continue with his extraordinary ring-making project. As chief metals officer of the Blackbird program at Beale Air Fore Base, Sgt. Freeman was able to preserve a collection of mission-flown titanium components of various Blackbirds, ultimately using them to create hundreds of beautiful rings. Exploring his website is highly recommended.
These rings are made using titanium SR-71 Blackbird components provided by Sgt. Freeman, using similar techniques, to make similar models.
The rings are custom-made to order, and each one is unique. To order a ring, you’ll need to provide:
-An accurate ring size
-Desired width
There are two ring styles from which to choose:
-Classic crowned ring, made of solid titanium
-Layered ring with an industrial look, made of two thin sheets spot-welded together as part of the Blackbird’s construction
Next, you can choose an oxide and finish color, if desired:
-Satin natural titanium finish
-Gold oxide
-Edge of Space (blue-purple)
-Variable color effect (mostly green and pink)
-Mission-flown Oxide (a unique ‘alpha case’ shiny grayish metallic finish with subtle iridescent dancing colors; recommended)

“The extreme conditions in which these parts were operated has a variable affect on the finished product. Operating at 3,200 degrees F with pressures exceeding 34,000 pounds per square inch, along with the tremendous earth shaking vibrations at the SR-71 exhaust afterburner that propelled the 120,000 pound aircraft faster than a high powered rifle bullet.
[The rings] are NOT perfect, NOT intended to be perfect, and NOT intended to meet any common jewelry standards in color, or shape. These variations prove that the rings are hand made.
The finish that appears on your item may contain the original manufacture tooling marks, stress or chaffing caused by the extreme temperatures and pressures in the SR-71's exhaust system.
These titanium parts were used to their physical limits and there may be anomalies in the metal itself. The items [are] all that remains of them except for the aircraft themselves that are on display in museums. The mission flown titanium parts that these items are composed from are considered priceless artifacts of aviation history.” -Sgt. Daniel Freeman
